National Night Out, an annual event to unite communities to learn crime prevention strategies and meet one another, happens on the first Tuesday in August each year. Tonight, neighborhoods within SoMa served by the San Francisco Police Department's Southern Station come together at the Gene Friend Recreation Center at 270 Sixth Street from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. to meet one another and to learn how to improve public safety in the area.
While the 6th Street meeting location may not be a territory that Rincon Hill, Yerba Buena, South Beach, South Park, or Mission Bay residents cross very often because of safety concerns, the efforts of 6th Street residents, the City, some brave entrepreneurs, and tireless non-profit groups like Urban Solutions are providing very noticeable, positive changes for those who do wander through the area on a somewhat regular basis. I highly recommend trying some of the very tasty Vietnamese dishes at Miss Saigon on the southwest corner of Mission and 6th Street (100 6th Street). There's also a wonderful new grocery market that offers fresh fruits and vegetables to the neighborhood called Mi Tierra (1000 Howard Street at 6th Street) that you might want to stop in to say hello and pick up some healthy snacks or a drink while nearby.
Also, if you wander down Folsom a little ways west of 6th (towards 7th), you can find a wonderful new (opened in October 2006), successful neighborhood park called Victoria Manalo Draves Park. According to the Neighborhood Parks Council, the park is named for Victoria Manalo Draves, the first Filipina to compete in the Olympic games. She won gold metals in both the springboard and platform diving events in the 1948 olympics.
