While American cities like El Paso, Portland, New York City, Chicago, and Baltimore are progressing with versions of ‘Sunday Streets’ or already assessing their first successful events, San Francisco’s ‘Sunday Streets’ may be delayed or killed altogether for 2008 by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors this week.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin has set ‘Sunday Streets’ up to be hit-and-run by Tuesday, potentially tossing aside the physical health, environmental, and community building benefits for thousands of San Francisco residents. Read my past entry, “Supervisors Buckle Up to Drive Over ‘Sunday Streets’” for more details about how the event might get delayed or killed this week.
In the meanwhile, please enjoy these two videos of ‘Sunday Streets’ events in Portland, Oregon and in Bogotá, Colombia to see what sorts of experiences San Francisco could have if we all decide that "Yes, we can!" Yes, we can!
