Halloween party in China Basin/Mission Bay in addition to Castro?

July 19, 1:03 AM

The Rincon Point-South Beach Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) meets on Monday, July 21st at 5:00 p.m. in the South Beach Harbor Services Building’s Community Room.  Listed on the agenda is a discussion about the possibility of a Halloween event to be held at Giants Parking Lot A behind AT&T Park in China Basin.  Bob Davis from the City’s Entertainment Commission will facilitate the discussion.

After shutting down Halloween in the Castro in 2007, the City is looking for multiple locations to host events this Halloween.  Because Halloween occurs on a Friday this year, there will likely be a higher than usual number of revelers who come to the City to celebrate that evening.

Prior to 2007, Halloween in the Castro was marred by an increasing amount of violence.  The City considered hosting a Halloween event at Piers 30 and 32 or Giants Parking Lot A last year, but those plans never came to fruition for various reasons.  The Entertainment Commission recently hired experienced events coordinator Laura Fraenza specifically for the tasks of planning multiple events for Halloween evening in San Francisco this year.

Whether or not residents in Mission Bay and nearby South Beach and Potrero Hill welcome a Halloween event near their neighborhoods is still to be determined.  Giants Parking Lot A is relatively isolated, and many residents also question whether or not an event at that location would attract a critical mass of revelers to even justify the expenses.

Other items on the agenda for Monday’s meeting include a presentation by Wade Crowfoot from the Mayor’s Office about the planned ‘Sunday Streets’ event along with an update from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency about projects at Pier 40.
