Napa Valley has good news for organic wine enthusiasts and businesses. Ehlers Estate has just earned organic certification from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) for its historic 43.8-acre Napa Valley estate vineyard.
The Ehlers Estate vineyard is located on an historic winegrowing site in the northern part of Napa Valley’s acclaimed St. Helena appellation. Ehlers Estate has always been at the forefront of environmentally aware farming practices.
In 2004, the vineyard adopted organic farming practices to further its production of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc.
“Earning our CCOF organic certification is something we are very proud of,” says Vineyard Foreman Francisco Vega. “This land has a rich winegrowing history and exceptional terroir. Farming organically allows us to preserve the purity and character of our estate fruit in a way that respects the land.”
In the spring of 2005, the vineyard embraced biodynamic farming, a holistic, chemical-free approach to agriculture based on the work of Austrian scientist and philosopher Rudolph Steiner. Guided by renowned biodynamic consultant, Philippe Armenier, Ehlers Estate embraces all of the strict criteria and practices of biodynamics, including the use of all plant and foliar treatments, and adherence to the biodynamic calendar and the natural cycles of the earth.
Ehlers Estate Director of Sales and Marketing Kelly McElearney is thrilled about the certification:
“The Ehlers Estate Vineyard has a history that predates modern chemical-based farming, so it is fitting that we are returning to those natural, organic roots. We also believe that this winegrowing approach dovetails with the socially conscious philosophy that drives everything we do here—from the way we farm to our commitment to funding international cardiovascular research.”
Ehlers Estate combines a historic winegrowing estate, environmental consciousness and international philanthropy. All proceeds from the sale of these wines fund international cardiovascular research through the esteemed Leducq Foundation for cardiovascular research that was established in the name of Jean Leduq, founder of Ehlers Estate.
