There has been some drastic rule changes for the 2009 F1 season. Considered the biggest rule change in the history of F1 racing, several key elements have been modified to enhance the experience for the viewers. The general idea of the modifications is to increase the ability to over take other drivers.

The best of these new rules for 2009 F1 is by use of a new energy saving fun factor. An eco-friendly system that reduces pollution while simultaneously increasing the viewers pleasure is a technological break through. By creating a video game like "boost" button for the drivers, up to  6.5 seconds of extra eighty-two horse power. Intermittent or complete burst, it allows the drivers to take more command of the race.

Exterior modifications:

  • Increased the size of front wing
  • Lowered the height of front wing
  • Exhaust systems are directed and extended more towards the rear
  • Adjustable front wing flaps, 6 degrees rotation
  • Front nose cone lowered
  • Rear wing size higher but reduced size
  • Total down force drastically reduced
  • Rear diffuse edge moved

Mechanical modifications:

  • KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) aka regenerative braking

Rule changes:

  • RPMS lowered from 19k to 18k
  • Only eight engines allowed per season
  • Use of racing slick tires only

The rules were generated to increase viewing pleasure while at the same time cutting costs due to economic changes. Toyota had F1 budget cuts this year, and many others are expected to fall in. With the automotive industry in a pinch, the money to sponsor these events just isn't flowing like it used to.

Tire technology is going to be limited to slicks but of different compounds. Dry and wet tire compounds will be made available along with other variations of soft to hard. The difference this year is the drivers can only select two tires per race. This rule is aimed at reducing costs and waste through out the season.

Engine rules say that if a driver requires an additional motor over the season limit, a 10 place reduction in the grid standing is issued. These new engine rules are aimed at cutting costs which can be controlled by driving styles. By use of the KERS system, it will allow for some of the wasted energy to be re-used in form of a boost button. A total of 6.5 seconds per lap is maximum allowance of using this boost either in one constant boost, or 6.5 cumulative seconds of separate boosts.
