It's a sad day for the "Lambo" guys when a huge luxury coupe can hold it's own against the Gallardo in a top speed battle. The Lamborghini Gallardo seems to have spent more of the budget on looks rather than performance. The video below features a race between a completely stock, much heavier BMW M6 versus the performance icon; the infamous light weight Lamborghini Gallardo.

Most enthusiasts like myself, would expect better performance out of a name like Lamborghini. All of my life I have loved Lamborghini, until they produced the Gallardo.  A miniature, less expensive version of the Murcielago; this spunky sprite sure does look fast. The bright color paint and snazzy plastic actually adds 100 hp on the bling-o-meter. Don't be fooled by it's intimidating looks because it's not that fast; even when comparing it to much heavier luxury cars like the BMW M6. Let's check out the specifications before we get to the video content.

2006 BMW M6

  • 4,999 cc 5 liters V 10 front engine with 92 mm bore
  • 75.2 mm stroke
  • 12 compression ratio
  • double overhead cam
  • variable valve timing/camshaft
  • four valves per cylinder
  • Premium unleaded fuel 91
  • Fuel economy EPA highway (mpg): 18 and EPA city (mpg): 12
  • Multi-point injection fuel system
  • 18.5 gallon main premium unleaded fuel tank
  • Power: 373 kW , 500 HP SAE @ 7,750 rpm; 383 ft lb , 520 Nm @ 6,100 rpm
  • Curb weight: 3909 lbs

2006 Lamborghini Gallardo

  •  4,961 cc 5 liters V 10 mid engine
  • 82.5 mm bore
  • 92.8 mm stroke
  • 11 compression ratio
  • double overhead cam
  • variable valve timing/camshaft
  • four valves per cylinder
  • Premium unleaded fuel 91
  • Fuel economy EPA highway (mpg): 17 and EPA city (mpg): 11
  • Multi-point injection fuel system
  • 23.8 gallon main premium unleaded fuel tank
  • Power: 368 kW , 500 HP SAE @ 7,800 rpm; 376 ft lb , 510 Nm @ 4,500 rpm
  • Curb weight: 3153 lbs

Watching the video below, both cars use the 50 mph rolling start. The Lamborghini immediately jumps ahead, but not much. Only about half of a car length lead before the BMW starts to close in. The race turns in favor of the BMW once top end speeds are reached. Surprisingly, the Lamborghini cannot beat a heavy luxury car in this race. For the price of the Lamborghini, I'd expect better.

Did you know? The Gallardo has been beaten by several other sports cars including Subaru Impreza WRX, Mitsubishi Lancer, Toyota Supra, Chevrolet Corvette, and others. The more money paid for a vehicle doesn't always indicate it's position on the pole. Watch the clips below to see more of the Gallardo losing races against cars you wouldn't expect to win.

Most Lamborghini enthusiasts would agree that even though the car only loses a little (does not apply to Supra, WRX, Evo), it still holds it's integrity by retaining street respect. You get what you pay for ultimately, and the Lamborghini still gives you an incredible name with sleek styling. The interior of the Gallardo is very nice with a plush Italian feel to it. Luxury is more what Lamborghini is selling today than performance. It might not be the fastest car around, but it is still one of the nicest.

If you want to win races, do not buy a Lamborghini Gallardo. Two thirty thousand dollar sedans just ripped apart a car that costs what some consider a life investment.  That big boat of a beemer coupe just won a race against Lamborghini's Gallardo. The BMW also had gulf clubs, groceries, and a car load of friends to watch a Lamborghini get beat. It just isn't an ideal picture of what you would expect from Lamborghini.

Furthermore,  the notorious "fart can class" as some refer to it; showed up to humiliate and abuse the expensive exotic. The Supra, WRX, and Evo dominated hands down. The Supra made me question of the driver if the Gallardo was even using the accelerator. This just isn't right; no offense to the M6 and others, but what is this world coming to? Lamborghini is not what it used to be, but still carries the heritage. Lamborghini has lost the performance edge when it comes to the Gallardo.

Overall, it's big trouble in little Italy. Discuss this article at TampaRacing.com
