Preface: Gearheads and car enthusiasts, take my reporting on this “fluff” piece with a grain of salt. I’m a girly girl who is much more up on the difference between Louboutins and Manolos! Looking for something with more depth? Check out Kimbal Musk’s Huffington Post piece from October 19!
What does Downtown Boulder now have in common with London, Munich, Monaco, Toronto, New York and Los Angeles (just to name a few)? T-E-S-L-A! Tomorrow Tesla Motors opens a gallery at 915 Pearl Street within Downtown Boulder’s historic West End.
So what will the gallery house? Tesla Roadsters. The Roadster is Tesla’s first car in production. Ok, here’s where I have to pause. I have to be honest, I have no idea what I’m talking about. [Quick chat with co-workers and visit to Tesla’s Web site for some in-depth information and I get it…sort of!] Electric cars. Not just any electric car – but really sleek, high performance …FAST…100 percent electric cars.
Here’s some basic specs: Its sticker price is just over $100K with standard interior features including heated sports seats, touch screen display, electric air conditioning and heater, cruise control, power windows & locks and most important to some, retractable cup holders! The Roadster goes from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph. The car is zero emissions and holds a charge of about 240 miles. It fully charges in as little as 3.5 hours. Roadster financing is available through Bank of America and Tesla vehicle do qualify for the full $7500 US federal tax credit on battery-powered cars as well as state incentives, sales tax waivers and rebates. (Side note, Coloradans who are lucky enough to take home a Roadster this year get to take advantage of a $42,083 state tax credit! A $6,000 cap to the tax credit will go into effect next year.)
According to my co-worker, I need to sit tight and wait for the release of the Model S – a sedan more modestly priced at just under $50K with more room for car seats (seating seven people), and a 45 minute QuickCharge. The Model S should be available for delivery beginning in 2012.
Whether you are in the market now or just want to learn more about these cars of the future, jump off the bricks and head west to the Tesla gallery where you can admire at these groundbreaking vehicles.
Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Tesla will be hosting an open house on Saturday (Oct. 24) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday (Oct. 25) from noon - 5 p.m. Tesla – just another great reason to visit Downtown Boulder!
