
The shooting at Ft. Hood in Texas was the shocking headline news on November 5, 2009. A soldier opened fire at the U.S. Military base Fort Hood and and killed 12 people. 31 more people have been injured. Initially it was reported that the gunman was dead, but after about four hours of reporting it was announced that the gunman was still alive and in custody. The suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, is a psychiatrist licensed in Virginia who was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood. Hasan was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq and reportedly did not want to go, but whether that was a factor in the shooting is unknown.
Hasan is a practicing Muslim who was born in the United Stated and is a citizen of the United States. Just why he allegedly opened fire and perpetrated the worst shooting in a USS Army base in history is a mystery.
CNN Larry King Live interviewed a panel including Tom Kennif (commissioned JAG officer) Dr. Phil McGraw, Heidi Craft (former Navy Psychologist. The discussion got a little heated and emotional as they debated whether the shooting was a possible terrorist act or some kind of psychotic break. They panel agreed that it is premature to debate a motive, as not enough is known. The motive for the shooting will hopefully be revealed with time and investigation.
Major Nidal Malik Hasan is a high ranking field grade officer, meaning that he outranks about 95 percent of the military according the Tom Kennif on the CNN Larry King Show. Hasan's work at Fort Hood involved working with soldiers returning from Iraq and helping them through post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Wolf Blitzer announced in a special edition of the CNN Larry King Live Show that according to reports, it appears that Hasan will survive the injuries he sustained in the shooting.
