The Morton House Museum presents “A Presidential Holiday” for it’s annual holiday event. Located in the Arts District of Benton Harbor, the historical Morton House has been offering programs celebrating the 200th anniversary of President Lincoln’s birth, so it was a natural to extend that theme for the holidays.
The Benton Harbor arts district is centered around the Territorial Road that brought the Morton’s, like so many others, to the Benton Harbor/St Joseph area. With all their worldly goods piled high on their covered wagon, the family was lucky to make 20 miles a day. Now, of course, we can whip across the state on I-94, but the ongoing construction on Benton harbor Main Street (I-94 Business Loop) is reminiscent of the old muddy trails the pioneers had to contend with. They are making progress, though, and I know the shops, restaurants, art galleries and other businesses like the Morton House will be glad when that is finished!
If you are coming from the east on I-94, it is still possible to get off at exit #33 and head into Benton Harbor, and simply take a right on Hull Street where there is a very large sign pointing to the Morton House. If you are already in St Joseph, however, it is still best to follow the detour signs out north on Main Street, St. Joseph.
The holiday event is a chance to see the Morton House “The Home of Benton Harbor History,’ veiw the special exhibits, have an old fashioned tea, and get some great ideas for holiday decorating. Plus this year, the holiday event will be offered on two weekends! This weekend Saturday, November 14 the Museum will be open from 11AM to 5PM, and on Sunday, November 15 from 1 – 5 PM. Those hours will be repeated the following weekend, Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22.
