"Puritanism--The haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy."--H.L. Mencken
The entertainer Beyonce is scheduled to perform in Egypt on November 6. Some are looking forward to seeing her. According to Al Arabiya, "Tickets to see bootylicious Beyonce in concert at a Red Sea resort have reached $400." (You can be sure that at those prices only a minutely tiny percentage of Egyptians can even begin to consider thinking about going to the show.)
But some are not pleased. Hamdi Hassan of the Muslim Brotherhood, accused the government of trying to corrupt Egyptians in order to distract them: “The government is trying to make people indulge in sin and licentiousness to cover up the other crimes it is committing against them,” he said in parliament, claiming that Beyonce “appears naked in her clips.”
Whatever one thinks of Beyonce's music or talents, it's heart-warming to know that the Muslim Brotherhood is being annoyed. This mini-controversy represents modernity resisting a totalitarian impulse. Let's hope she doesn't cave, and perform in a burqa.
