Morning fog burned off around mid-morning in the Sacramento area, leading to a beautiful day in the capital city. Highs pushed into the 70s across the Valley with light southerly winds for most of the day. With high pressure in place, the overnight hours will be cool and calm with lows in the upper 40s.
Pleasant weather is expected for not only the rest of the week, but for the weekend as well. A large area of high pressure over the state will steer any storm systems far to our north, keeping California dry while the Pacific Northwest remains wet and unsettled. The main weather story during this tranquil weather period will be morning fog.
Conditions this week are ideal for the development of fog. Three main ingredients are needed for fog formation: water vapor, cool temperatures, and light winds. Rain from recent storms has left the ground moist, which provides the first ingredient. High pressure sitting over the state leads to light winds. The low sun angle of the fall season leads to cooler days, which are followed by cool temperatures at night. All three of these conditions are in place this week in the Valley, so expect the fog each morning through Sunday.
The rain chances that were mentioned in this column yesterday are now looking less likely. The high pressure over our area will hold on for a few more days, steering our potential weather-maker north of the area. It still bears watching, however, so if you have outdoor plans for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week you will want to follow the forecast this weekend.
