Sony PSPgo hits stores Oct. 1, 2009

Sept. 29, 2009 – Sony is set to release its latest version of the PSP handheld gaming device, the PSPgo, and it's slicker, slimmer, smaller and packed with new features.

But Sony: What’s the deal with the extreme price hike? Don’t you know there’s a worldwide recession going on?

To its credit, Sony did more than just dress up the new  PSPgo. Sony's latest version of its handheld gaming device has a newer game delivery system and better controllers that are located on a slide-out display – all on a sleeker, slimmed-down body that actually fits comfortably in a pocket.

The downside is that the PSPgo won’t play any of your UMDs game disks, nor will it play games on your current memory stick. So, on top of the $249 price – which is at least $100 more expensive than the PSP 3000 – you’ll also pay to download games to the device and to purchase a new memory card.

The costs nearly take all of the joy out of owning a new PSPgo. Plus, many of the most popular games are not yet available through the download store.

What the PSPgo does have going for it are some incredibly sweet enhancements. What you’re getting is a new Bluetooth capable game player with a more vibrant screen, more powerful and tactile controls, and one that you can hook up to your TV to duke it out with friends or other competitors on your big screen.

It also has the same long battery life, Wi-Fi, and 16 gigs of internal memory, but the battery is no longer replaceable and it uses Sony’s proprietary, high-capacity Memory Stick M2 for memory expansion. In a nice toast to feature’s past, with the sliding control panel shut, the PSPgo displays a clock, calendar and plays music.

Bottom line: The PSPgo is cute and someone forward looking with its new download store. But, with the pricey price tag and added costs for accessories like a new Memory card and games, I’d just hang out a little while longer with my PSP 2000 or PSP 3000, which costs $139 at Dell, and wait until the price drops a bit.

The PSPgo goes on sale on Oct. 1, but you can pre-order one online.
