And so we turn to the rematch between Christine Gregoire and Dino Rossi. I will begin by saying that, while Gregoire was not my first (or second) choice for the nomination in 2004, she was certainly my choice over Rossi in November of that year. This year my choice is even clearer.
My problem with Rossi is one of trust. Just as in 2004 Dino wants us to view him as an outsider who will ride in to Olympia and change the way our state government does business. The problem is, in 2003 Rossi was into his 2
nd term in the State Senate where he was serving as Chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee – a position not typically given to some “outsider.” It was from this position that Rossi wrote the infamous budget that did, in fact,
cut some 40,000 children from the healthcare rolls. From an April, 2003 Seattle PI article:
“New to the table, Senate Republicans would cut more than 40,000 children off Medicaid health coverage for the poor to stave off some other human services cuts that Locke proposed, said Sammamish Sen. Dino Rossi, budget writer for the upper chamber.”
Then we have the whole “prefers GOP Party” thing this year. I mean what’s that all about anyway? Why would someone who has run as a Republican in three senate races and a previous campaign for governor all of a sudden decide that he “prefers the GOP Party”? Surely it doesn’t have anything to do with the abysmal approval ratings for Republicans – does it? His spokesperson Jill Strait says, "We've found that voters know GOP means Republican."
Really? Well according to a post from Seattle Times Political Writer and Blogger, David Postman from June 30th, “Dino Rossi's rebranding effort may pay off with voters who say they don't know what it means when a candidate declares himself a member of the "GOP Party." That's what Rossi used when he filed for office, saying that it is an insult to voters to suggest that they don't know the initials for Grand Old Party, an old Republican nickname.
A recent poll by
Stuart Elway says that about 25 percent of respondents didn't know what GOP meant…” “…And it will come as no surprise that of those who said they didn't know, or got it wrong, the biggest chunk, 27 percent, describe themselves as independent. That's where the greatest benefit of rebranding could come for a Republican trying to buck a 24-year gubernatorial losing streak for the party.”
There is also the
issue of Rossi’s tax returns. Oh I know he’s not REQUIRED to release them but it seems to me that someone asking us to trust him with the highest office in our state should be anxious to show us where/who his income is from.
Now nothing here says that Dino Rossi has done anything illegal, immoral, or improper but, to this examiner, there sure does seem to be a pattern deliberate deception and I expect better from those who would work for me.
As for Gregoire - a public servant for the citzens of Washington State for 4 decades, Chris has never attempted to back away from her record. The good and the bad; she has taken her lumps and kudos all in the light of day. While I have disagreed with her on more than one occasion over the years, I have always respected her honesty and dedication to the people of this state.
Peace,
