Rossi's Free Speech Zones

August 13, 9:38 AM

Good readers, I apologize for my long absence from these pages. I have been away on a long overdue family vacation (and a self-imposed sabbatical from political postings). To be honest, I was hoping that some time away might give me a different perspective on our current state of politics but, alas, as a story from our own pages here at the Examiner posted just yesterday, tells me that (for the Rossi campaign at least) it remains politics as usual.
“Demo cameraman records ejection from Rossi event
State Democrats say off-duty police officers were too rough when they forcibly removed a Democratic Party worker from a police union news conference featuring Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi.
The move, videotaped by the Democratic worker last week, is the latest example of Rossi's policy of not allowing his events to be taped by Democratic Party workers.

                                                               GOP Candidate, Dino Rossi

I have already said that I have a trust issue with “sometimes Republican candidate” Dino Rossi and this simply reinforces that concern. Oh sure, Rossi supporters will insist that this incident (and others before) took place at private events on private property but I would argue that they lose that argument when it is the stated policy of the campaign to prevent such video tapings. According to a  related post by Seattle Times Blogger, David Postman
The incident Thursday was the roughest implementation yet of Rossi’s longstanding policy not to allow the Democratic Party worker to record his appearances. “We don’t allow them in to collect attack video,” Rossi spokeswoman Jill Strait said of the practice of having Akers escorted from campaign events.”

Just what (or who) is it that Rossi thinks he has to hide? Does he really believe that KOMO, KONG, or KIRO won’t replay an obvious gaffe or worse if their cameras catch it? And, as is pointed out by both the story at the Examiner and Postman’s blog entry, the Rossi campaign has no problem with the State "GOP Party" sending their own operatives to Gregoire events.

Democratic Party spokesman Kelly Steele said it's hypocritical for Rossi to kick Akers out, since a Republican Party worker is allowed to record video of Gregoire's appearances.
Strait, however, said Gregoire is "free to establish her own policies on this issue."
Yes, Governor Gregoire has established her own policy on this issue. The governor is open and accountable to the people; while Dino obviously prefers the seclusion of George W. Bush inspired “Free Speech Zones.”
Maybe Dino should take his own advice and let the sun shine in.

Peace,
Chad Shue
