In today’s business world, many keep their finger on the pulse through the internet. In this particular instance, a finger on the pulse specifically means staying connected with people and information. The people can be personal or professional contacts, but it is a fact that many can be found through an online source. Usually, these individuals can be found through some type of association with something else, whether it is a hobby, profession, friends, or something else.

One site to keep your eye on is Ning.com. This is a social network site that allows its members to create their own site for others to join. Therefore, here, you will find dozens of sites created for the same purpose, but might cater to a certain geographic area, or a small part of a whole. With this site, you can view the various Networking categories, however to view specific links associated to these categories, you must sign up as a member.

Linkedin is one of the most popular professional online resources right now. However, if you have personal contacts you would like to re-connect with, this is a great place to start. This site offers an individual’s work history and contact information, and various methods of contact that include contact through the site only to current phone numbers. This is driven by the member who set up their account. In addition, this resource offers a lot of business related information to its paid and non-paid members. In order to view this site, you must create a login and password.

Twitter is a free social networking and texting type of online service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are limited to 140 characters in length and are displayed on the user's profile page and automatically delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). This service has the ability to send tweets directly to a followers cell phone. It appears this site is for those who are simply keeping up with individuals identified. This is another service that you must be a member of, before you can review their online site, but the cell phone capabilities do not necessarily require membership. Yet, one must consider their online service provider’s requirements, as there may be an additional fee for this service.

Another popular online resource is Facebook. This resource is primarily for social networking. If you are looking for childhood friends and/or lost acquaintances, this is a great resource. It also allows for you to stay abreast of what is going on in their lives once you find them, since Facebook members tend to regularly update their profiles, video and pictures. You must note there is no limit to the number of pictures and posting, and the content on this site is not regulated. Therefore, with this freedom, you can find things that the professional community might not agree with on this site. So, many professionals are very careful when posting information on this site. It is important to maintain a certain level of professionalism, so that information found on this site will not come back to hurt you later within your career. This, too, is a service that requires you to sign up as a member before you can view the site.  And,another source that is very similar to Facebook is YouTube.

There are thousands of these sites on the World Wide Web. Take a moment to search ‘”networking sites” on the internet, and see which one works best for you and your personal needs.
