The show will go on!  That was the clear message out of last night’s big, double-secret “announcement” episode.  Oh, yeah there was the mention of divorce...but in the strange, strange world of “reality” television, that’s just a story point.

In the skewed perspectives of the Gosselin family, Jon especially has been reduced from real emotion, to television-speak.  He referred to this as “the hardest episode ever.”  When asked Sunday if Monday’s show would involve the announcement of divorce, he replied, “You’ll just have to watch the show.”     The torture of divorce, the scars that the rest of the world deal with....in the world of Jon and Kate, that’s just next season!

And what can we expect from the show in the future?  Well, tension.  While most of us seek to alleviate stress in our lives, you can bet that show producers will be looking to milk it out of the Gosselins.

Look for the tension of Kate trying to run the house with eight children by herself.  Look to witness the very real sadness and confusion of those children, and asking Mommy to explain.  Look for the tension of Kate trying to explain it away.  All while the camera rolls.  What’s easy to forget, is that all these “moments” happen while a camera, cameraman, and a sweaty soundman with a giant microphone on a long stick are trying in vain to be inconspicuous in the corner of the room.  These private moments of pain, are a show.

Look for the dating tension.  Yes, Jon will be the bachelor on the prowl.  Cool apartment.  Very hip for a 40ish dude.  He’ll either be cast as a complete heel who doesn’t think much about the kids except on visitation.  Or, he’ll have inner tension.  The tormented single Dad who thinks of the kids during his first dates with other women.  Oh yes, if you  want to go on a date with Jon Gosselin, prepare to wear a microphone, because the cameras will be rolling.

For Kate, the tension will be the wincing when she “hears” that Jon is dating.  The tension of replacement, while she is heroically raising that family.  She will have offers of dates too.  Will she take them?   Look for the camera to hang on her looking at herself in a mirror while trying to make that decision.

And if she does go out, who will babysit?  Now that could be its own series...

Lastly, yet constantly, there will be the storyline of possible reconciliation.  That’s what every child of divorce privately wishes for, and what the audience will be led along with as a carrot to keep coming back.  In their “private moments”, you can bet each will ruminate about how it could have worked out...and maybe, just maybe, still could.

TV shows love conflict.  It’s the essence of story.  For the Gosselins, their conflict used to be the challenge of raising eight kids.  Now, it has morphed to something quite different.  This is now a broken love story, and lets hope those eight children don’t just turn into “extras”.
