Gary Lock, haircut, Rumored to head to Washington DC
Image taken from MetroKC.gov.

It was announced yesterday that former Washington governor, Gary Locke, was to be tapped as the latest nominee for the Secretary of Commerce.  This is, of course, a huge coup for Asian-Americans, but definitely a huge deal for Washington politics.

Locke has been instrumental in API politics as the first Chinese-American governor in U.S. history and throughout his tenure, he and his wife – Mona Lee Locke – worked at getting programs started such as low-priced daycare for single parents at local colleges.

This position in President Obama’s cabinet has been rather difficult to fill with past nominees withdrawing for various reasons, but Locke seems like a safe bet, especially having walked away from his gubernatorial office without scandal (save that rumored racist threat that caused him to not seek a third term).

Locke’s nomination is a reflection of the visibility of API faces increasing in elected offices and it will be interesting to see what the next eight years in American politics will look like from an ethnic and socio-cultural standpoint.
