In an informal survey, we called 22 privately owned campgrounds in various geographical locations in the U.S. to better understand how their business is shaping up. We asked about the level of business already and the level of reservations compared to this time last year. Of the 22 surveyed, 21 (95%) said that they feel that their business is up over this time last year. About 70% said their business was up significantly and were very optimistic about their upcoming camping season. Most cite the steady and lower prices for fuel as the main factor. Here is a look back at fuel prices.
Other factors cited were:
* RVing was economical in uncertain economic times
* Allows a vacation closer to home
* More intimate style for a family vacation
When asked about the prices charged this year compared to last year, better than 80% have kept their prices at or below last year’s rate. We say at or below because many campgrounds are now including Wi-Fi in their rate versus charging extra for this service.
The take a way for RVers is that it looks like a good season to go camping but don’t assume you can just show up at a privately owned RV park without a reservation. The more popular the area and campground the more important it will be to make your reservations early. It should be noted that we only looked into privately owned RV parks and not National or State parks.
Happy Camping
