Archives month

I just got an e-mail from the Washington State Historical Society and Museum announcing that this October is the third annual Archives Month in the state of Washington.

The Archives Month Web site still reflects last year's information, but they promise it will be updated soon. According to the site,

The purpose of Archives Month is to celebrate the value of Washington's historical records, to publicize the many ways these records enrich our lives, to recognize those who maintain our communities' historical records, and to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving historical records in archives, historical societies, museums, libraries, and other repositories across the state.

This year's theme is "Washington at Play," and they are calling for the submission of "photographs, ephemera, manuscripts, and archival collections that promote this year's theme." I'm sure more details will be at the above Web site soon, but for now, here's the contact information they provided in the e-mail:

Benjamin Helle
Washington State Archives ~ Olympia Regional Branch
Archives and Records Management Division
Office of the Secretary of State
1129 Washington Street SE
Olympia, WA 98504

phone: 360.586.7320
e-mail: bhelle@secstate.wa.gov

If there was ever a time when it was necessary to "promote the value of archives, archival collections, and the professionals who care for our history," surely it's now. I'm looking forward to what the citizens of Washington come up with this year.
