The University District Museum Without Walls, on whose steering committee I sit, is unveiling its first project Friday, April 3, 2009, at the UW Tower. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
UPDATE, May 25, 2009 — The exhibit, which had been slated to end in a week, has been extended until November 30, 2009.
Open to Question: Activism in Seattle's University District incorporates an outdoor exhibit in the north plaza and an oral-history DVD featuring interviews of Ray Chinn, Megan Cornish, Matthew Fox, Leslie Grace, Fred Hart, Stephen Herold, Lynn Huff, Vivian McPeak, Margaret Hoban Moore, Henry Noble, Tamara A. Turner, and Patty Whisler.
The opening-night reception, which begins at 5:30 p.m., features a slideshow presentation at 6:30 by local historian Paul Dorpat of Seattle Now and Then fame. King County Councilmember Larry Gossett—a founder of the UW Black Student Union during the very period Open to Question addresses—will also speak, kicking the program off at 6:00.
More information, including a schedule of future events, is available at the UDMWW blog. These include a screening of the oral-history DVD, Open to Question: Voices from the University District, on April 25; a University District Street Fair Event on May 17; and a program with civic-engagement leader Nancy Amidei on May 28.
Here is the trailer for the DVD. All the interviews can be found at the UDMWW YouTube channel.
