Ernie Els couldn’t contain his excitement after he finished his play in China. Els posted a final round 63, which was one short of tying Phil Mickelson for the HSBC Championship. “I knew the situation. And for me, this was great preparation for weeks to come,” said Els after his final round. Despite coming up short, Els preferred a glass half full approach versus half empty. “I had a good time. Today was a wonderful day. I mean, I really had a good time. I knew the pressure was on,” he said.?His new found optimism appears to be tied to an equipment change that fueled not only his excitement but also his recent return to form. “I started playing a new golf ball that Callaway made, very first week. It's a different texture ball. The golf ball, this is what I've been looking forward to, is this golf ball. It would have been unbelievable if I could have won with this ball. It would have been great for Callaway and myself. I'm looking forward to the future now and I think my equipment is now spot on,” he declared. “If you gave me 63 before I played, I obviously would have taken it. I was thinking 64, but still came up a bit short. But I can't complain.” Callaway said the ball in question is its new Tour i(s) model. According to the company, it is the softest model its ever made and was designed in advance of the new rule to take effect next year regarding the groove change. It is a four-piece construction, Callaway Golf said, that features a Hyper-Urethane cover for maximum spin and control around the greens without sacrificing distance off the tee. Refined HEX Aerodynamic and a second generation Dual Core construction produce a stronger ball flight in all wind conditions, the company promised. The ball will be available at retail in January and feature a retail price of $42.99 per dozen.?Els has one more event in Dubai before taking the rest of the year off, he said. But that could change, he added. “I might play my friend's tournament at Leopard Creek, Dunhill, but that's it,” he said but quickly turned his thoughts back to his new ball. “This was great work for me; working on the golf ball. This week was a big week. Made a lot of putts. My short game is back. So I'm feeling good about my future again.”
