Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 cause of death in the United States according to the American Heart Association. Think of all the dollars sunk into health care for heart related illnesses, rising costs of health care, dependency on prescription drugs to lower cholesterol, blood pressure and heart surgeries performed. In 2001, the estimated cost of health care expenditures and lost productivity attributable to cardiovascular diseases was $298 billion.

What if dietary changes could undo the damage or prevent it in the first place?
“Many studies have shown that vegetarians seem to have a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart disease (which causes heart attack), high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and some forms of cancer.”-American Heart Association
"The vast majority of all cancers, cardiovascular diseases,
and other forms of degenerative illness can be prevented
simply by adopting a plant-based diet."
T. COLIN CAMPBELL, Ph.D.
former Senior Science Advisor to the American Institute for Cancer Research
Director, Cornell-China-Oxford Project on Nutrition, Health and Environment 1983-1990

According to the National Center for Health Statistics and the American Heart Association, about 5.8 million men and 6.1 million women alive today have suffered from a heart attack or acute chest pain.
How quickly would a vegan diet change a person’s health? "Patients fed a vegan (meat and dairy free) diet during an intensive 12-day live-in program experienced an average reduction of 11% in total cholesterol levels. Most patients also lost weight and had improved blood pressure levels."-Journal of the American College of Nutrition 1995
The vegan diet has no greater impact on your health, your heart and your life. Vegetable proteins are healthy protein sources whereas animal proteins clog our arteries. Animal products are the only source of cholesterol in the diet.
Some hard facts from author John Robbins, author of Food Revolution and Healthy at 100:
·         Blood cholesterol levels of vegans compared to non-vegetarians: 35% lower
·         Chicken has about as much cholesterol as beef. There is simply no escaping the correlation between meat consumption and cholesterol levels.
·         Risk of death from heart disease for vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians: Half

Thirteen years ago I went vegetarian and lost ten pounds without effort, naturally. I went Vegan recently and feel better than ever. It isn’t hard to change your eating habits and if high blood pressures runs in your family, like it does in mine you have even more reason to take care of your heart.
