Months are usually dedicated to different ethnicites in this city, however October is dedicated to a specific kind of people called "artists." There will be a slew of events, openings, and art happenings all around the city and beyond. Be sure to check out the CAC site or the City of Chicago site for upcoming events, lectures, demonstrations and any city sponsored shows. It is a lot to take in, but this is a great opportunity to see what this city has to offer artistically whether its paint, dance, audio, performance, or just plain freakish. This excerpt is taken from the City of Chicago site about October.
Chicago Artists Month, organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, will return this October for its thirteenth year. The annual citywide showcase of Chicago’s vibrant visual arts community will highlight "Artists and Issues that Matter." Anticipating the November election, the theme explores issues of interest and concern to artists and the art community, including political, environmental, moral, social, global, or personal issues.
During last year’s Chicago Artists Month, over 60,000 people visited the exhibitions by both emerging and established artists, along with openings, lectures, art demonstrations, tours, open studios, and neighborhood art walks. Events took place at 220 galleries, museums, cultural centers, and arts buildings in over 40 Chicago neighborhoods throughout the city.
The month-long celebration, organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, is currently inviting organizations and artists to be part of the 2008 Chicago Artists Month. Hosted events must feature one or more professional Chicago-based visual artists at a public venue in Chicago during the month of October. The Department of Cultural Affairs provides support through widely distributed promotional materials, a website and a citywide promotional campaign at no charge. Program partners are encouraged, though not required, to use the “Artists and Issues that Matter” theme as they plan their program.
For more information on Chicago Artists Month and the participation form, visit www.chicagoartistsmonth.org. All submissions must be received by May 15.
