UPDATE: Willy and Spencer have been adopted! Whisky is feeling lonely and left out! Please consider adding this beautiful friendly cat to your home!

It's Furry Friends Friday once again and today we're looking at a pair of bonded cats, Whisky and Spencer! Bonded cats are any two cats that depend on each other like a family. They aren't necessarily from the same litter, but they've lived together for an extended period of time and can't bear to be apart.

Whisky and Spencer were recently surrendered at the Seattle Animal Shelter when their owner could no longer keep them. The pair love to ride in the car, purr loudly and are just all around nice cats. Spencer is a three-year-old domestic shorthair tabby who loves laser lights and Whisky is a four-year-old domestic shorthair tortoiseshell who loves everyone he sees (now the name is making sense), is very playful, and also adores sitting in laps.

Despite their happy personalities, Whisky and Spencer have been a little freaked out since they arrived at the shelter. Huddling together and sleeping together, they are each others' protective blankets, said Kara Main-Hester, Manager of Seattle Animal Shelter's Volunteer Program and Fundraising.

They arrived at the shelter scared as they were separated at first, but once they were put back together they started coming out of their shells almost immediately. "That's what's cool about bonded cats. They're much more confident together than alone. Apart, it takes a lot more time for them to come around," said Main-Hester.

"When we have bonded cats and can't find someone to adopt both of them, the other cat goes through withdraw and all the work the volunteers put into them doesn't matter. They went through a really stressful thing coming to the shelter and to have the only stability in their lives taken away is really hard."

That was the hand dealt to Willy, one half of a former pair of bonded cats at Seattle Animal Shelter. The buddy Willy came in with was a pure bred Rex and someone adopted him for his fancy-pants breed -- but didn't want Willy! Poor Willy!

Willy is only three-years-old. He's a beautiful black Siamese/domestic shorthair mix who is very sweet and likes to chat. But mostly he loves to purr. He also enjoys being held and snuggling in laps. He's an indoor cat who loves to play and has lived with dogs, cats and birds in the past, so he's perfect for any household!

If you're considering adopting two cats it's much easier to get a bonded pair right away because sometimes adding a second cat later on can be difficult on both cats concerned. When you adopt any two random cats they can have issues, but with bonded cats that's highly unlikely because they are so used to each other and prefer to be together.

"Cats in general tend to be less social with other cats. They're not pack animals. With bonded cats you know for a fact that they will get a long," said Main-Hester. "If you want two cats, it's best to adopt them together."

And, having two cats rather than one doesn't necessarily mean twice the cost. Feeding two cats isn't that more expensive than feeding one and many vets will give you a discount if you bring in two cats to the same yearly checkup appointment.

You can visit Willy, Whisky and Spencer between 12 PM and 6 PM, seven days a week at the Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave West, Seattle, WA 98119.

For a fun "cat-show" type festivity, come to Seattle Animal Shelter's next Fabulous Felines adoption event on July 18 at the Phinney Ridge Community Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103, from noon to 3 PM. Foster parents "show" their cats and tell you everything you need to know about the furry friends available for adoption. It's a good way to get a lot of information on the cat you're adopting.
