Thurston Howell is just one of many cats set to compete in the Average Joe Cat Show. Mr. Howell encourages you to partake of the cheeky fun. He adds, "It will be a capital time, Lovey!"

To the outside world, your cat may appear to be nothing special. He has the low, broken cackle of a chain smoking, five-time divorcee. Instead of Fancy Feast out of a crystal dish, he’d rather devour a greasy hotdog straight off the kitchen floor. And his breed? Definitely, “other.”

Even though his affection is irreplaceable, Fuss n’ Boots will never be a pampered, posh show cat. Still, he deserves a day of special recognition. Enter, the Average Joe Cat Show.

The fifth annual event organized by Purrfect Pals will take place this Saturday, May 2 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Shoreline Community Center, 18560 First Ave NE in Shoreline. Tickets are $5 per person or $12 per family.

Unlike stuffy, formal, cat shows, the Average Joe Cat Show is designed to be a fun, family event where cats are rewarded for just being themselves!

Contestants will vie for ribbons in the following categories: Longest Tail, Softest Fur in the West, Longest Whiskers, Fluffiest Tail, Black Beauty, Best Senior, Most Unusual Markings, Mr. and Mrs. Personality, Most Average, Scrappiest Looking, Most Playful, Most Obnoxious, and Monster Cat (largest).

There will also be costume and photo contests. Spectators will get to have their say by voting in the People’s Choice Awards. Cast your vote at the cage of the cat you dig the most!

The event will also include a raffle, for-profit and non-profit vendor booths, a silent auction, cats and kittens available for adoption, a ‘Kids Korner’ activity area and delicious vegetarian and vegan food, catered by Mirkwood and Shire Café.

You also won’t want to miss the opportunity to speak with behavior specialist, Joy Turner, who will be on hand to answer all of your animal behavior questions.

The initial purpose behind Average Joe was to educate people about Purrfect Pals, but it eventually evolved into one of the organization’s major annual fundraisers. Based in Arlington, Purrfect Pals provides a no-kill sanctuary, foster and hospice care for homeless cats and works to end over-population through humane education, spay/neuter programs and permanent placement in quality homes. All proceeds from the Average Joe Cat Show will go directly to benefit Purrfect Pals.
