Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret is building a reputation for presenting some really original and really fun material. This weekend is no exception. They are presenting a one-man show titled Life as a Fabulous Disappointment. Life As A Fabulous Disappointment is an anthology based on the life of Tina LeGrand and the man under the make-up. Todd Barnes, a singer, actor and female impersonator brings his alter ego to the stage in a 90 minute show filled with comedy, life reflection and overcoming obstacles. With the help of singer, songwriter and pianist Daniel Dillard, this delightful collection of modern Broadway, classic pop and cabaret music will take you on an amusing and inspiring journey.
Barnes is presenting a very personal and very raw journey in a lively musical review. It is a testament to the beauty and catharsis that the stage can bring. The show was created by Barnes six years ago “Inspired thru anger” as he put it. He’d been turned down by many men because of the things in his life that he was good at. Men didn’t want to date him because he was a drag queen, because he was a hairstylist, or because of any other number of reasons that he took personally. He became angry, and felt that the things he was talented with were holding him back – becoming a disappointment for himself. He used these emotions, his feeling of disappointment in himself, to create this show. “I'm sure that you could always find someone that would tell you I am a disappointment, but what I have realized in life.... is that you can be as fabulous as you want to be. Learning to live thru and be fuel by the disappointment actually make me/us that much more fabulous. I have my faults but surely don't see myself as a disappointment. However I do see myself as a fabulous disappointment and all the means is that I acknowledge the feelings of those around me but do my best to not let them consume me.”
The show is musical revue that is peppered with his life stories and personal thoughts. A combination of Broadway, pop, and other material. His goal is for the audience to feel… something. No matter what it is. “I hope that everyone leaves feeling ready to embrace their own lives as a Fabulous Disappointment. I think in order to get there we all have to laugh, cry, be angry, feel indifferent and be uncomfortable and I am ok and with my audience feeling any and all of these. I want them to leave with and new perspective and maybe a little something to think about.”
Barnes is risking a lot – pouring his experiences and personal journey on stage for everyone to see. Just another reason why theatre is a needed artistic expression for everyone. Plus, there is a little something for everyone and, as Barnes puts it “On top of it all it gets a little bawdy at times and who doesn't love a bawdy cabaret show??”
