The city of Denver is buzzing right now. You can feel the electricity in the air as we prepare for the Democratic National Convention. People all over the country are watching Denver closely, as the leaders of our communities talk about change and look to the future. However, just because a person may not be old enough to vote doesn't mean that he or she doesn't have a voice and an opinion worth sharing. The youth of our country have very unique perspectives on the issues we are all going through, and this event is designed to help us all hear what they have to say.
This Sunday, August 24th at Civic Center Park Unbound Grace, a non-profit organization building supportive relationships with women, their families and the larger community, presents Youth Voices 2008, The People's Convention. This event is presented by young adults to be the voice of kids. They attempt to answer the questions of what concerns them. What is their reality? What issues come to mind when you talk about family, culture, and the world? They answer these questions through poetry, through song, through dance, and through drama. Art can be an incredible medium in which to answer such big questions. What are their solutions, how can they inspire change, and how can we begin the process of healing? You will be treated to youth slam poetry, dance numbers, music, and of course the theatre pieces written by kids, celebrating the Hope of Tomorrow. The People's Convention begins at 9 AM with a Healing Ceremony lead by Native American Healers, and then the youth performers take center stage at 10 AM. Some of the biggest and best groups in Denver will be there, including; Shadow Theatre Company, Su Teatro, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble II , Denver School of the Arts, Celebrate 1908, Arts from Ashes, and many more. Whats more, the event is being Emcee'd by the band People's Party and Tony B. Conscious of MTV's Rock The Vote - so this is sure to be a huge and wonderful event. There will also be an interactive walk taking place during the convention. The walk, which will be held under the canopy of trees in the SE corner of Civic Center Park, is giving other nonprofit organizations a chance to show what they do and how they impact us all. Everyone that goes through the walk is encouraged to sign up to get active in this community. I encourge you to go out and watch these kids do what they do best. These kids have something to say, and I think we all should listen.
