George Clooney's love affair with Italy
It all started in 2002 when George Clooney was motorcycling through the Alps and spotted a beautiful villa on Lake Como in northern Italy. He decided to purchase the 18th century Villa Oleandra and paid $7 million for it.
Surrounded by lush vegetation on a glacial lake near Switzerland, the mansion has 25 rooms and a pool. Clooney claims he doesn't sleep in the master bedroom because it's too big. He hosts dinner parties for his Hollywood friends there when they're in town and even used the villa to film scenes for his movie, Oceans 12.
Based in Laglio, a half hour from Milan, Clooney spends his summers absorbing Italian culture and enjoying the Italian way of life. He believes Italians have their priorities straight -- after a day's work, they take the time to enjoy their food and enjoy their personal life. They don't subscribe to the workaholic lifestyle the way Americans do. "Italians have taught me about stopping to celebrate life," Clooney explains.
Although Clooney doesn't speak Italian very well, he frequents local restaurants and trys his best not to attract attention in the small 900-resident community. He is often spotted riding around town on his scooter or motorcycle.
There are even rumors circulating the Clooney is interested in buying a second villa in Italy in Porto Recanti. Whether the locals are happy or not with this movie star residing in their town, one thing is for sure -- Clooney has put Lake Como and the Italian town of Laglio on the map.
