The most famous hot dog stand to the stars is celebrating its 70th anniversary this week. Pink's hot dog stand, located in Los Angeles, near the corner of Melrose and La Brea, will have seven nights of celebrity guests serving hot dogs with all profits going to charity.
Celebrity guests include Bill Cosby, Jason Alexander, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Huell Howser. Each night from November 7 to November 13, Pink's famous chili cheese dogs will be sold for 70 cents for 70 minutes beginning at 7:00 pm. While it is the norm to wait in a long line at Pink's, the lines may be even longer since the regular price for their famous chili dogs is $3.50.
Paul and Betty Pink borrowed $50 back in 1939 to buy a portable cart to sell hot dogs on the sidewalk in Los Angeles. In 1946, the Pinks were able to expand to the current Pink's location at 709 N. La Brea Blvd. The hot dog stand's proximity to movie and TV studios such as Paramount Pictures and CBS Television City helped Pink's become a favorite among celebrities over the years.
Pink's proudly displays photos on the wall of stars who are or were frequent customers. Everyone from Jay Leno to Katie Couric have stopped by Pink's at one time or another to experience the extra-long all-beef hot dogs and secret receipe of chili created by Betty Pink years ago.
Some stars even have their own hot dogs named after them including the "Martha Stewart Dog", which includes relish, onions, bacon chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut and sour cream; or the "Rosie O'Donnel Long Island Dog", with mustard, onions, chili and sauerkraut.
Pink's, which serves approximately 2,000 dogs and 170 pounds of chili per day, is one of the few Hollywood landmarks still standing after all these years.
