The big news from the 2009 US News & World Report College Rankings is that Harvard has overtaken Princeton as the top-ranked university in the nation. The top ten National Universities according to US News include:
1. Harvard
2. Princeton
3. Yale
4. MIT
4. Stanford
6. Cal Tech
6. Penn
8. Columbia
8. Duke
Penn's Wharton School of Business ranked #1 as usual for top undergraduate Business school, while MIT earned top spot for the best undergraduate Engineering program.
As for local universities: Johns Hopkins was in "elite" company at #15, buffeted by Ivy-League Cornell University at #14 and Brown University at #16. University of Maryland jumped one spot from #54 last year to #53 this year. Penn State - University Park jumped one spot too, from #48 to #47.
Meanwhile, UMBC was ranked as the fifth most up-and-coming National University in the country, while Loyola ranked as the seventh most up-and-coming Master's University in America. Even Stevenson University got into the act, ranking as the #1 up-and-coming Baccalaureate College for the Northern Region, though it seems to be the only one ranked.
Finally, the Naval Academy, which ranked as Maryland's top school according to Forbes Magazine earlier in the week, was overtaken as the country's top service academy according to US News. The US Military Academy earned an impressive #14 ranking on the top Liberal Arts Colleges list, while, the Naval Academy came in at #22, a reversal from last year's rankings of #20 for Navy and #22 for Army.
