Making the Most of a College Fair: Part 3

October 2, 7:18 AM

Many college fairs take place this time of year and students should be prepared to make the most of these opportunities.  This is Part 3 of a three-part series about Making the Most of a College Fair.

In Part 1 we discussed general college fair tips. In Part 2, we explored how to best prepare before a fair, and today, in Part 3, we'll discuss the most important day-of-fair activities that will maximize your time and chances of admission.

High school students attend college fairs to collect information about schools they may want to learn more about and eventually apply to for admission.  Frequently, I see students walk into these events unprepared and ill-equipped to make the most of this great opportunity to impress the college representatives and make a positive lasting first impression while getting their questions answered.  Here are a few tips that may help you avoid common pitfalls and make the most of a college fair.

AT THE COLLEGE FAIR

-Pick up a bag and a list of schools in attendance.  Find the schools on your list and get started!

-Attend any workshops at the fair that interest you and your family.

-Skim the literature you pick up at each booth and take time to ask the reps any questions that come to mind.

-Ask specific questions.  Show the reps that you know the basics about their school, are interested in applying, and have done your research.

-Make a good first impression!  Arrive on time to the college fair to maximize your time and make sure to arrive well dressed.  Also, remember to take a business card from the college reps so you can write a thank you letter after the college fair thanking him or her for their time and reiterate your interest in their college.
