If you're a sports fan who likes to travel, then a visit to the Hall of Fame of your favorite sport is no doubt on your life list. But did you know there are at least 34 sports Halls of Fame in the United States? In a previous article, we looked at the Halls of Fame for the major professional sports teams in North America. But there are dozens of other popular sports, from golf, tennis and swimming to running, biking, gymnastics and beyond.
Yes, there are Halls of Fame for all of these sports, and for some you might not even have imagined. You could spend several years worth of vacation time traveling to all of the Halls of Fame in the United States. Aside from the five major sports I've already written about, I count at least 29 additional sports Halls of Fame, with even others existing online or at the sport's national headquarters but not in an actual museum building. Of these 29, six are in Florida, making the Sunshine State something of a Hall of Fame state, as well. There are three Halls in New York, Colorado and Oklahoma, and two in Rhode Island. The others are spread across 13 states.
Here is an overview of the Halls of Fame on the East coast, from Massachusetts down to Florida. In the next article, we'll covers the Halls that are located in other regions of the U.S.
Northeastern United States
Baseball, basketball and soccer have their Halls of Fame in this region of the country, and so do eight other sports. The most prominent of these is perhaps the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. If you visit, you can easily stop in neighboring Bristol, Rhode Island, as well, to learn about yachting's greats at the America's Cup Hall of Fame. There are three Halls in upstate New York - boxing, distance running, and horse racing - that are not far from the baseball and soccer Halls of Fame, so you could actually visit five of these museums on a single trip. Volleyball, field hockey and lacrosse also have Halls of Fame in this region of the U.S.
Southeastern United States
Florida tops the Hall of Fame list in this part of the country with six such museums, led by the Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine and the Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale. While you're in the state, you can also visit Halls of Fame for polo, fishing, croquet and chess. And it's no surprise that motor sports have located their museums in this region, with one in Talladega, Alabama, and a NASCAR Hall set to open in Charlotte, North Carolina.
