Fuego Connect's image carousel makes for easy naviagion

Fuego Connect, one of the newest and most stylistically unusual entries into the online dating market, just launched on September 10. It’s a sleek, sexy and easy-to-navigate site with a dynamic, fun feel to it. San Francisco-based founder, Brogan Keane, created it because of his belief that attraction and long-term bonds arise out of shared passions.

“I wanted to create a site that focuses on people’s passions, because those are what make each of us interesting and unique,” he says. He explains that when people meet at cocktail parties they have discussions about what genuinely excites them and he wanted Fuego to channel that type of connection more than traditional dating sites often do.

Keane estimates that about a hundred users signed up before the site’s September 10th launch. Busy people who want to get to know others based on interests can easily post a video of their recent beach trip, which tells potential partners more than just saying “I love walks on the beach.” Updating your short profile is quick and easy. Since Fuego Connect is brand new—and currently only serving the Bay Area-it’s not clear what its ultimate demographic will ultimately be. Current users are primarily in their 20s to 40s and are equally divided between men and women. Users’ ages are not displayed, but you can search by decade. Keane has chosen to minimize age as a search criteria, in order to focus on what he believes really makes people tick.

Users may be put off by the absence of an easy-to-find age. Even though about half of online daters fudge their age, most have strong ideas about what age-range they are willing to date.

Creating a Passion Card Profile for this dynamic site takes less than five minutes. Membership is completely free for Charter Members who sign up this year. Rather than describing yourself and your ideal partner, Fuego Connect asks you to upload a photo, identify a passion and answer several questions about it, such as “What are your favorite activities related to your passion?” and ”How has your passion positively impacted your life?” Potential passions are only limited by your imagination. Current options range from entrepreneurship or family to extreme sports of various kinds. If yours isn’t on the menu, it’s easy to add. Once your profile is approved, you’ll have the option to add videos and complete an “About Me” essay. Your “FiredUp Status” is a Twitter-like feature that allows you to post random thoughts above your photo, which will likely appeal to those who love texting or Facebook style communications.

Fuego Connect is highly interactive and entertaining as the graphic interface engages the user immediately. Users’ photos, labeled with their passions and “Fired Up” comments appear on a carousel. Click on a photo and you’ll discover where he or she lives, view videos and see answers to profile questions. Fuegos, similar to Winks in Match.com, feature prominently. The number of Fuego points that you’ve received is displayed in the menu bar below your Passion Card, so that other members can tell if the site’s users have rated you as hot or not. While some might enjoy this type of rating system, those who receive an initially “cold” rating may end up feeling like they were the last kid to be picked for a team. This type of competition may appeal to alpha-males, but is likely to be a turn-off for many women.

The interactive features on this site are unique and make it worthwhile investigating. If you want to know a lot about a potential date before contacting him or her, this is probably not the site for you. But if you want to meet others based on common interests and activities, it’s definitely worth a try.
