Whether you meet someone online, in a social group, or begin chatting with them at the bus stop, it’s important to always keep safety in mind. Even when you’ve been introduced by friends, you should be cautious about revealing personal details too quickly.
When you meet people online, the first emails are done through the dating site, where you can easily rule out the riff-raff. After a couple of exchanges, move to personal email for a couple of messages. You should have a free Yahoo or Gmail account with an anonymous user name that you use only for dating.
When you move to talking on the phone, give out your cell number. If you are uncomfortable doing that, use a virtual phone number. For tips on how to block your number from caller ID, click here.
Unless someone close to you knows your date well, use your own transportation to get to your first meeting. Keep it short. If you find yourself feeling that there is something fishy about him or her, it’s OK to excuse yourself and leave.
You don’t need to hire a private investigator—just do a little research. The internet is a great tool to verify that your date is not misrepresenting him or herself. Be aware that some people may take offense if they discover that you have researched their background prior to meeting them.
