Get a group together to learn to make fabulous cocktails

Creating your own singles event is a great way to meet like-minded people. The premise is simple – invite your single friends, including amicable exes and those you've briefly dated. Ask them to invite their friends, and soon you'll have a good-sized event where you can meet eligible others in a sociable setting.

It’s easier to track potential guests if you use an online invitation service like Evite. If you would like to invite members of the public, consider using a site like Bay Area Link Up, which also has a great how-to guide to putting on events.

Choose from variety of events. Get a group together for a volleyball or softball game, followed by a pot-luck picnic in a local park. (Check with officials to see whether you need a reservation for a particular location.) You could plan a city walk in North Beach, or a hike in Pt. Reyes followed by dinner.

Get a group together to learn a new hobby. Choose an instructor who will make it fun, while providing the opportunity for participants to interact with each other as they learn. Elixir mixologist, H. Joseph Ehrmann, better known as “H.”, gets groups working hands-on, learning to mix eco-savvy cocktails. I took one of his seminars, and was impressed with his passion and ability to bring a group together, not to mention his use of organic, fresh, seasonal ingredients. He provides participants with their own bar tools and set-up during the class. There are many opportunities to compare notes with others.

If you’re not up for cocktails, dance instructor Michelle Kinkaid teaches a Night Club 2-Step or West Coast Swing lesson, and can DJ a dance afterward. You’ll rotate partners throughout the class, creating a friendly atmosphere, while making it easy to approach others to dance together later. Michelle does a great job explaining the mechanics of dancing in a manner that leaves everyone, even the left-footed, moving with ease.

Contact Michelle or H. well in advance of your planned class to coordinate schedules.

If you want to keep it simple, create a brunch or happy hour event. Choose a reasonably priced venue that is centrally located and accessible by public transportation, with easy parking.

These are just a few ideas for new ways to get to know other single people. Creating events is a great addition to your arsenal of meeting opportunities.
