Christian Motorcyclists Association: changing the world one heart at a time
You’ve seen them wherever motorcyclists gather. They are the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) offering free water and coffee . . . . and prayers.
Founded in 1975, CMA is dedicated to their vision: Changing the world, one heart at a time. They are interdenominational and evangelistic in nature with their outreach being primarily, but not exclusively, to the motorcycling community. A non-profit organization with over 136,000 members in over 1,000 chapters, CMA is dedicated to reaching people for Jesus Christ on the highways and byways through motorcycling. CMA is not a club but a ministry designed to make ministers of their members.
At the rallies I have attended, CMA was present but not “in your face preachy” offering help when asked, prayers if requested, and brochures for the taking (along with the free water and coffee). At a recent rally, three of us requested to have our bikes blest. CMA members gathered in a circle around our bikes, held our hands, and prayed with us, beseeching God to watch over our travels, to see us safely home, and for God to “cause the cell-phone-talking SUV driver” to see us and watch for us as we shared the road.
Among the many ministries of CMA are the Servants’ Ministry Team (offering help at rallies including registration, security, clean-up, etc.); Women’s Ministry Team (providing insight on building relationships with women by first meeting practical and physical needs of women); Prayer Ministry Team (training in the basics of praying for other people’s needs); Hospitality Ministry Team (the group responsible for providing that free water I keep mentioning); Music Ministry Team (their theme is “music to reach their ears, so that the message can reach their hearts”); Mechanical Ministry Team (instructs those with mechanical abilities on how to meet the needs of motorcyclists attending a rally); and First Aid Ministry Team (for persons with first-aid skills, team members must have completed a CPR or first aid course and have a valid certificate). As you can see, if you have a talent to share, CMA has a spot for you.
The major fundraiser for the group is Run for the Son. In 2008, CMA donated over $800,000 to their partner ministries (Jesus Film Project, Missionary Ventures, and Open Doors) to spread the Gospel around the world. CMA also holds state, regional, and national rallies for their members with focus on fellowship, praise and worship, fun bike games, and encouragement.
