Legislating the motorcycle industry out of existance
I wear a helmet when I ride because I choose to. I live in a state that does not regulate helmet usage for experienced riders and those riders over the age of 21. If my state legislators were to introduce a bill to toughen the existing law, I would fight it. As a reasonable, sane, intelligent adult, I believe I have the right to decide my own destiny. If that means riding without a helmet if I feel like it, then it is my right to take that risk.

More regulations regarding motorcycles is, I believe, just another way to legislate the sport and recreational motorcycle industry out of existence. If government had their way, we would all be driving eco-friendly little skateboards or taking light rail into town. Long gone would be the cruising days of our youth. (Remember when we filled up the tank and drove around all night just to see who else was driving around all night?)
Sure, we should all try to do our part to save the planet. Let’s start by telling congress they can only meet for two weeks, twice a year. That way, they wouldn’t be wasting energy and destroying our planet flying back and forth to Washington!
Moreover, if we allow government to pass more laws restricting our rights as motorcyclists, we will join the smokers of this nation; a pariah – shoved to the back with no rights at all. How many of you live in a community (or state) that no longer allows smoking in public? I am not a smoker but smoking, again, is a right and an individual choice. If I don’t want smoke blowing in my face, I will choose a smoke-free environment or I will simply move away from the smoke. Restaurants and bars are hit especially hard by this trend. I don’t want lawmakers deciding something that should be left up to a restaurant owner.
Helmet laws, pollution regulations, and noise ordinances are the beginning. Do your part. Stand up for your rights before you no longer have rights.
