Misty Fetko, is a devoted mother, just like me. As an emergency room nurse, she is a hard working professional, just like me. She wants the best for her family, just like me. She and I have a lot in common--- only, Misty has made it her life mission to make sure that, at least in this one important area, we will never be the same. I am forever grateful to her for that.
Misty lost her son to a rapidly growing killer among teens, Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicine Abuse. Even though Misty is a registered nurse, who has observed the symptoms of drug abuse countless times at her emergency room job, she was unaware that teens were intentionally abusing cough medicines and other otherwise beneficial medications to get high.
She learned in the most painful way possible...when she discovered her son unresponsive in his bedroom that fateful morning in 2003. Misty's story is a wake up call and a cautionary tale for all of us parents. The fact is that, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America*, 1 in 5 teens have abused a prescription drug to get high. One in ten teens reports having abused OTC cough medicine to get high. 28% report knowing someone who has tried it.
Misty Fetko has joined StopMedicineAbuse.com's Five Moms Initative. She is one of five mothers from across the country who have come together to use their experiences and their diverse backgrounds to spread the word and inform us all about the dangers of cough medicine abuse.
