Not since the days of the late, great Aloha Airlines has there been scheduled nonstop service from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) to Honolulu (HNL).
That’s about to change. Soon, LA Basin flyers won't have to use Los Angeles International (LAX) to take off for the Islands. John Wayne is a far smaller, decidedly less frenetic, launch pad.
Aloha stopped flying passengers back on March 31, 2008. A little less than two years after service ceased, Continental Airlines says it intends re-connect The OC with paradise, launching Boeing 737-700 nonstops on the route. March 7, 2010 is the start date.
Flights will operate four times per week, going to daily departures by next summer.
The twin-jet, Next Generation Boeings have more than enough range to make the trip without breaking a sweat. Matter of fact, Aloha used them on the SNA – HNL run before it stopped passenger service. The craft are fitted for two classes of service: first and coach.
