Here are a couple of clues that the folks who run Los Angeles International (LAX) would much prefer you take public transportation to their SoCal megaport than drive.
First, the public transport component, the carrot if you will: FlyAway Bus service from Orange County to LAX is set to take off November 16. The tab for the 50-mile trip from Irvine Station (that’s at 15215 Barranca Parkway) will be a comparatively reasonable $25 each way. The conveyance is green, green - a 22-seat bus powered by natural gas. First bus out from Irvine is 4:45 a.m.; the last one is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. FlyAways from LAX to Irvine start out at 9:45 a.m., with the last ride out at 9:45 p.m. There are a half-dozen departures each day in each direction.
Now comes the stick, the part that dissuades folks from driving to the airport. Effective November 19—three days after FlyAway’s Orange County launch—it’s going to cost you $2 more per day to park at Los Angeles International’s Economy Parking Lots B and C. That means you’ll pay $10 instead of the current $8.
Ostensibly “the rate increases are expected to help offset the rising cost for operation, maintenance and security of the lots,” according to a prepared release by Los Angeles World Airports, the entity that operates LAX. But the price hike could also push more people into public transport.
Orange County’s Irvine Station marks the fourth FlyAway Bus route from LAX. The other runs are to Van Nuys, Westwood, and Union Station.
