Natalie Portman is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and well-respected young stars in Hollywood today.  The makeup look that Natalie Portman wore at the Oscars is in perfect keeping with the eye makeup trends of 2009, without looking overly done.

Jeannine Lobell, using Natalie Portman's Rodarte Oscars dress for inspiration, chose to make the eyes pop with color.  Purple and violet eyeshadow can easily look trampy, but by choosing to use Chanel Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Orient Express, the eye makeup looks fun and flawless.  Notice how well the purple pops brown eyes?  This is exactly what spring 2009 makeup is all about.

And Natalie's Oscars makeup isn't just about the playful purple eyeshadows.  Lobell chose to finish off the eyes with a smoky black lashline and several thin coats of Chanel Inimitable Mascara.

What makes Natalie Portman's Oscars makeup look work is that Lobell chooses to let the eyes have it.  Her cheeks are swept with only a hint of color, making Natalie emit a healthy glow.

Natalie's lips are topped off with only a touch of natural color and shine. You can use virtually any lipgloss that is close to your natural lip color to achieve the same results.

By keeping the rest of the look simple, Natalie Portman doesn't look overdone, clownish, or out of place. Her eye makeup accessorizes her beautiful gown; it does not compete with it.  Take a page from Natalie Portman's Oscars makeup when you are adapting to spring 2009 makeup trends.  A little bit goes a long, long way.
