One of the fastest growing areas of health care is massage therapy.  Therapeutic massage and bodywork used to be seen as a complimentary medicine, or a relaxing service in a spa.  And while those perspectives are still true today, the acceptance of massage therapy for health and healing has propelled therapuetic massage into popularity.

While massage therapy can help treat some medical conditions, it's also an excellent way to reduce stress and take care of the whole body.

Though massage therapy is increasingly popular, there are many people who are apprehensive of getting their first massage.  Many misconceptions surround therapeutic massage, making the entire experience feel intimidating.  So what should you expect during your first massage?

How Do I Find A Good Massage Therapist?

Prior to booking a massage, most people have an idea of where and who they would like to see for that first massage therapy appointment.  If not, however, choosing a reputable massage therapist is important to experiencing a successful first massage.

Some ways to find a reputable massage therapist include:

  • Referrals from friends or family
  • Booking a massage through your hair salon, if they offer a day spa experience
  • Searching for a massage therapist or bodyworker through accrediting agencies, such as The National Certification Board for Massage and Bodywork
  • Looking through the Yellow Pages for practitioners who advertise their credentials

When booking a first time massage, it is important that you trust the source of your massage therapy.  Steer clear of therapists who advertise in the "adult" classified ads, and look for someone who is willing to give you referral information or their licensing credentials.  An honest and educated massage therapist will not be insulted if you ask for their education and licensing experience.

Licensing and experience requirements vary greatly by state, and sometimes by municipality.  You can check with your local ordinances for more information.

What Is The Best Type Of Massage?

Massage therapy is highly personal, and what is the best form of massage for one person may not be the best for another.  When it comes to massage therapy, two of the most common types of massage are Swedish massage and deep tissue massage.

Swedish massage is an excellent choice for a first-time massage.  This form of massage uses long, smooth strokes and induces relaxation.  Deep tissue massage, however, is a type of massage that works deeper into the muscle tissue.  Choosing a basic massage for your first therapuetic experience will help you determine what type of massage you prefer for the next session.

What Exactly Happens In A Massage?

Each massage therapist has their own unique style, but many of the same things will happen in a massage regardless of who you see or where you go for the service.

On your first visit, the massage therapist will want to get to know you and your medical history.  It's important to discuss your complete medical history with the therapist, especially if you have a history of accidents or injury, chronic ailments, or problem and achy areas.  Massage therapists treat your medical history as confidential.  By being open and honest about your medical background, you help the practioner give you the massage that your body needs without aggravating any conditions.

The general timeline of events during massage is as follows:

  • Discuss medical history with the massage therapist.
  • The therapist leaves the room and the client undresses and lies on the massage table, under a sheet.
  • The therapist returns and begins the massage session.
  • About halfway through the massage, the client will turn over so the therapist can work on the other side of the body.
  • When the massage ends, the therapist leaves the room and the client dresses again.

Do I Have To Be Completely Naked During My Massage?

No.  While many massage therapists and clients agree that completely undressing allows for the most thorough and comfortable massage experience, completely undressing is not necessary.  Many will choose to leave their underwear on during the session.

While on the table during the massage, the practitioner will keep you appropriately covered, or "draped," as it is called by professionals.  They will only uncover the area they are working on, leaving the rest of the body under the sheet.

Final Tips On Your First Massage

Before, during, and after the massage, do not be afraid to offer feedback to the therapist.  It is their goal to make you as comfortable as possible while also providing you with a therapeutic and relaxing service.  If the pressure is too much, do not hesitate to ask for a lighter touch. If it is too little, advise that you would like more pressure.

Massage therapy is a great way to enhance your overall health and well being.  While the practitioner is accountable for providing a professional experience, it is also important for the client, you, to meet them halfway.  Doing so creates a positive and rewarding health and beauty experience.
