About Kate Evans, Nia Instructor

Q: What steps led up to you teaching Nia?
A: My family moved to North Carolina in 2006 from Virginia. There were two things I desperately missed, Nia and the Waldorf School. I am a registered a nurse, my specialty is Labor and Delivery. When I worked in Virginia I worked all weekend night shifts, needless to say I was generally tired and irritable. During Nia classes I felt energized, joyful, and carefree. That feeling would last for several hours.

So, when we moved here, and there was no Nia, I tried several different exercises, including yoga, which I love, but none quite moved me the way Nia did. So I completed my first level of Nia training and began teaching.

Q: What training do you have?
A:
The first level of Nia training is the White Belt Intensive. It is a 40+ hour Intensive, completed over the course of a week. I am in the process of registering for the next level of training, the Blue Belt.

Q: What is Nia?
A:
Done barefoot to diverse and inspiring music, Nia is a transformational movement practice that teaches you to be more JOYFUL, EXPRESSIVE, and ALIVE in your body, both inside and outside of the studio. Nia is holistic, engaging your body, mind, emotions and spirit. Nia draws from the dance arts, martial arts, and healing arts to create purposeful movement that will help you grow and learn.

Q: What sets you apart as an instructor from others? What sets Nia apart as exercise?
A:
In my experience, each Nia teacher brings a different quality to Nia. My focus lies in sensation. With my background in nursing and my yoga practice I am deeply committed to teaching my students the importance of sensing body, mind, spirit, and emotions to create awareness, and thus improve or sustain wellbeing.

Nia differs from other exercises by its complex nature. Not only are we burning calories and toning muscles, but we are engaging our senses and emotions, releasing stress and increasing joy! The music is awesome and we flow from move to move and song to song.

Q: Where do you teach?
A:
I am currently teaching at the Lake Norman YMCA and Community Yoga.

Q: What are the most common questions you get asked?
A:
The most common questions I get asked are, “What is Nia?” This is really hard to answer. Some people say, “Nia is like chocolate, you just have to taste it!” The easiest way to explain it is that Nia is a combination of dance arts, healing arts, and martial arts.

I am also asked whether you need to be coordinated to do Nia. No. The steps are easy and repetitive. Do you have to be in shape? No. Nia is designed to embrace anybody regardless of age or fitness level.
