Colorado has a few feet of snow on the ground, and if you live in a snow state – you aren’t too far behind. While our aging loved ones tend to be chilly year round for a number of reasons including slowing circulation, and reduced activity - as the temperature drops outside, staying warm can be even more of a challenge. Here are some creative ways to keep your aging loved one warm in the winter months:

  • Use a microwavable neck warmer as a foot warmer. These can be heated in the microwave just before bedtime and placed between the sheets at the foot of the bed to keep feet warm at night. (these are available online or in many stores where natural products are available – or you may be able to make your own with instructions available online)
  • Use an inexpensive towel warmer (found at home and bath type stores) and use it to warm blankets before bed time or even during the day to keep someone warm. Blankets can be rotated – one on the warmer and one on your loved one – trading them out when the warmth wears off
  • Use a space heater to pre-heat the bathroom before a shower or bath
  • Heat a couple towels in the dryer during the shower or bath – the freshly warmed towel wrapped around them and placed on their lap as they emerge wet from the shower will feel heavenly
  • Use booties that have a bean type microwavable insert in to keep feet warm during the day
  • Use packaged hand warmers (found at ski and sporting goods stores) to warm hands on especially cold days or on outings
  • Use long underwear or outdoor type bottom layers to wear underneath regular clothing to keep out the chill
