Ever since some jerk stole my bicycle at the Palo Alto Caltrain station, I have been looking around for a replacement. One idea is to just get the bike I have always wanted—a Calfee bamboo frame—but I am also considering used and vintage bikes.
One site that I have found to be a lot of fun for brainstorming purposes is Collectors Weekly, which has countless pages devoted to everything from vintage Martin guitars to vintage Coro costume jewelry.
Like all category pages at Collectors Weekly, the vintage bicycle page includes thumbnails of current auctions of vintage bicycles at eBay. The advantage of seeing these results at Collectors Weekly instead of at eBay is that Collectors Weekly filters out the items with no activity. The result is a quick snapshot of only the good stuff. Last time I checked, there were a lot of people selling old Schwinn Sting-Rays, like the one I had when I was a kid, as well as old Raleigh and Huffy 10-speeds. I'm not sure any of these is going to be the bike that gets me up to Skyline, but it's been fun to window shop.
Other features of the site include interviews with experts and collectors. For example, the bicycle page features an interview with a guy named Jim Snell, who is mostly into old Chevys but is also very knowledgeable when it comes to vintage Schwinns. Check it out.
