Apropos of absolutely nothing at all, my son reminds me that when Hamlet premiered on a Japanese stage in about 1900, the lead actor, Kawakami Otojiro, made his entrance on a bicycle. As Earle Ernst tells the story in his book The Kabuki Theatre, "Hamlet on a bicycle was not incongruous to the audience of that period, for both Hamlet and the bicycle were new and foreign and therefore logically belonged together." So, to cycle or not to cycle: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the abruptly opening car doors of outrageous misfortune, Or to pedal against a sea of pedestrians and by opposing, merge with them.....
Or something like that.
