The recent heat wave here in northern California is supposed to break today, and temperatures are forecast to drop into the high 60s as we head into the weekend. But after a couple of days in the low 90s, I think we can safely say that the early, cool part of spring, when you leave the house for a morning bike ride wearing gloves, and then steadily shed layers as hour one becomes hours two and three, is unofficially behind us.
I'm going to miss a lot of things about this time of year—trilliums are right up there at the top of my list. I've admired these plants, which can be found poking through the poison oak and ferns by the side of the road, for years. But I didn't know their name until about a week ago, when I sent this cellphone shot to my friend Marianne. "Trillium," she replied. "Probably the California native. Shade plant, a favorite of everyone who sees it." Thanks, Marianne. Count me among its admirers.
