It's not too early to make plans for a rail journey through the spectacular fall foliage of New River Gorge. The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society runs New River Train excursions through the beautiful New River Gorge in southern West Virginia on four days, just two weekends, once a year.

Here's what the CPHRRHS says travelers aboard the New River Special can expect on their 12-hour trip, "As one of the newest national parklands, the 'Grand Canyon of the East' along the New River is aglow in fall colors in mid to late October. It is during this peak autumn foliage time that our train traverses the former Chesapeake & Ohio mainline from Huntington, WV to Hinton, WV, allowing for a front-row seat to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country."

Tour with train excursion

U.S. Tours offers the New River Limited Autumn Train Tour which includes the train trip plus lodging, dining and additional stops. Here is the tour itinerary:

Day 1 - Travel to Huntington, WV. Huntington City Tour combined with "We are Marshall" Movie Sites. Check into your hotel for a two night stay. Dinner at the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe.

Day 2 - Ride the New River Limited all day Autumn excursion. Round trip from Huntington to Hinton, WV. This 12 hour excursion through the New River Gorge National Park on rails set beside beautiful whitewater, below towering mountains, in what is known as the Grand Canyon of the East.

Day 3 - Morning tour of the Heritage Farm Museum & Village. Tour the Blenko Glass Factory. Travel home.
