With no entrance fees on Father's Day 2009, national parks are prime places to take Dad to celebrate his day. For those who are willing to look in their "own back yard" first, these special places can be even more budget-friendly.

Think local. In his announcement about the fee-free weekends in national parks this summer, Secretary Salazar noted that most Americans live less than a day’s drive from a park. For many, it's an easy day trip and for others, one or more park sites are only minutes away.

For travelers, the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence. Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and the other grand iconic national parks beckon millions each year. But, there are hundreds of wonderful parks across the country that are closer to home and more accessible for families.

This year, priceless Father's Day memories at a national park can be almost cost-free. Here's how:

  • Head over to the National Park Service "Find a Park" map, choose you state and see just how many places you have to choose from.
  • Remember--no entrance fees on Saturday and Sunday, so you might want to take in more than one park.
  • Then it's off to the website for your destination park to find out what you can see and do.
  • Be sure to find out about the free Ranger Programs and maybe some special events to honor fathers.
  • Pack a picnic lunch, drinks and snacks.
  • A tank of gas or less should do it.
  • Take lots of pictures so Dad can remember his day.

This summer, on Father's Day weekend (plus July 18-19 and August 15-16 too) some of the best things in life can be free.
