The Washington, DC area is not short on places to find delectable tasty frozen treats by any means. All across the city and in the suburbs you can find ice cream and sorbet and gelato and Italian ice...and if you're not careful, all those luscious bites will land squarely on your hips. But hey, it's hot and who really cares about calorie counting anyway? Grab the kids and head on over to one of these spots for something cool and delicious.

Rita's
Serving well over 20 flavors of Italian ice made with fresh fruit (yum!), cream ice, smooth and creamy custard, Rita's signature gelati and more, Rita's stores are popping up everywhere. And I, personally, am not mad about that. The wild black cherry ice is one of my family's favorites, but there are a whole slew of other flavors to choose from including green apple, island fusion, pina colada and twisted melon. Rita's has several locations all around the DC metro area so please check the website for a location near you.

Dolcezza
It's all about gelato here, Italy's richer version of ice cream. You'll probably visit this spot more for yourself than the kids because with flavors like blueberry lemon verbena, lemon opal basil, shiro plum, champagne mango and toscano espresso granizado, the children will hardly know what to choose. But when it comes to something sweet, children usually aren't too picky so go ahead and let them experiment with flavors a little bit. Visit Dolcezza on the web for more locations.

Moorenko's
You'll go nuts over all of your ice cream choices here: coconut, german chocolate cake, danish sweet cream, fresh ginger, and you can have your scoop in cup, cone, waffle bowl, chocolate waffle bowl...the options are almost endless. Moorenko's also has a list of sorbets on the menu that change seasonally. You can have some now and get some for later in a pint or quart.
